The AFPVA grew out of the lessons learned from unsuccessful attempts over the years, galvanised by Facebook in 2009, culminating in a meeting in 2018. The 2018 meeting saw around 30 AFP veterans come together, in person and via video conferencing, with representatives of the AFP. It agreed that, after some 40 years of AFP activity, we had sufficient interest, goodwill and momentum to formalise our activities.
The Australian Federal Police Former Members Association Inc. (AFPFMA) was registered as an incorporated association on 13 December 2018 and we are the only organisation with an elected body representing former sworn and unsworn members of the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Our members have dedicated their careers to serve the Australian community and to keep it safe and secure.
The creation of the AFPFMA was not mandated or directed in its creation; former members took the initiative to get it done. Former members provided the resourcing in time and money to create the Association. These contributions are a powerful and tangible show of trust and support for how and what we are doing, and this support has now survived. The inaugural AGM held in October 2019 ratified our approach, showing the ongoing confidence and commitment to the model we are pursuing. The self-initiated nature to the AFPFMA adds to our credibility across our membership.
The first Facebook group AFP Former Members Network, was created to help former AFP members reconnect with each other and share memories of days gone by. We have evolved to more than just a social group now.
Thirty former members of the Australian Federal Police attended a historical foundation meeting to propose the formation of the AFP Former Members Association. It was unanimously resolved that we push forward with the idea to create such a group and establish a working party to draft our objectives and a constitution.
The final meeting was held to form a committee of the AFP Former Members Association and adopt our new constitution and form the inaugural committee.
An application was made to the A.C.T. Government to register and incorporate our Association.
After 39 years, the Australian Federal Police now has a former members association. Approval was given by the ACT Government to incorporate our Association.
The Australian Federal Police Former Members Association Inc. officially launches, and membership is now open.
Over 60 AFPFMA members attend the AFP College at Barton, to hold our inaugural Annual General Meeting. Other events included a tour of Belconnen station, BBQ by the lake and an AFP Museum tour.
A general meeting of the AFPFMA was called and the resulting meeting members agreed to change the name to the AFP Veterans Association.
A General meeting was held and a new Constitution was adopted. This change allows the AFPVA to acquire Charity Status, this will enhance the AFPVA Ian “Jacko” Jackson Welfare Fund to ensure assistance to our members when needed.
